Rick Santorum Beating the Drums of War for ? - November 18, 2011

Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), a candidate for the Republican nomination for President, appeared at an event in Washington, Iowa, on November 18, 2011. In this fourth segment of his appearance at an Italian restaurant, Santorum continues a Q&A session with the audience.

The questioner asks about Santorum's positions on foreign policy, specifically regarding Iran and Israel.

Santorum responds by discussing:

- the threat that would be posed by the Iranian government gaining nuclear weapons
- the history of previous nuclear threats such as the Soviet Union, where Mutual Assured Destruction was a deterrent from using nuclear weapons
- Iran's "fundamental difference" from any country that currently has a nuclear weapon
- increasing sanctions on Iran, especially on their oil sales
- other avenues of attack and containment he would pursue against Iran

"You need to help those in Iran who want to overthrow the government. That was part of the bill I helped get passed in 2006. President Bush never funded it...and President Obama cut most of it...there's strikes going on in Iran all the time, but they don't last long because people run out of money. What if we got them money so they could keep the strikes going, shut down the economy, shut down the transit system, cause civil unrest? This is what we need to do."

"We should use covert activity...there's been several nuclear scientists who are involved in the nuclear program in Iran who have turned up with 'mysterious accidental deaths.' I've made it very clear in the policy I've put out there that if you are a nuclear scientist working on the nuclear program in Iran you are an enemy combatant of the United States and you can be killed."

"We should be working with the Israeli military right now in preparing a strike package to do what the Israelis did in Syria and Iraq, to take out the nuclear capability...People say you might start a war if you attack those facilities. You will start a war if you don't attack them."
