Dans un univers vaste et mystérieux, un groupe aussi petit que puissant agit depuis des siècles, le Corps des Green Lanterns (Lanternes vertes). Ces protecteurs de la paix et de la justice ont juré de préserver l'ordre intergalactique. Chaque Green Lantern porte un anneau lui conférant des super-pouvoirs. Quand un nouvel ennemi, Parallax, menace de détruire l'équilibre des forces régnant dans l'univers, leur destin et celui de la planète repose entre les mains de leur dernière recrue, le premier être humain à en faire partie : Hal Jordan. Hal est un pilote d'essai doué et arrogant, mais les Green Lanterns respectent peu les êtres humains qui n'ont jamais maîtrisé les pouvoirs infinis de l'anneau. Toutefois, Hal se révèle véritablement être la pièce manquante du puzzle. Outre sa détermination et sa volonté, il possède une qualité unique au sein du Corps : son humanité. Encouragé par son amie d'enfance -- Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), elle aussi pilote -- il pourrait, s'il parvient à rapidement maîtriser ses nouveaux pouvoirs, jouer un rôle décisif dans la guerre contre Parallax et devenir le plus grand Green Lantern de tous les temps. Martin Campbell a réalisé Green Lantern à partir d'un scénario de Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim et Michael Goldenberg, d'après une histoire de Greg Berlanti, Michael Green et Marc Guggenheim inspirée des personnages de bandes dessinées publiées par DC Comics. Jouent également dans le film, Blake Lively (The Town prochainement en salle, la série télévisée Gossip Girl) dans le rôle de la fougueuse Carol Ferris, pilote d'essai et héritière présomptive de la compagnie d'aviation de son père, Peter Sarsgaard (Une Éducation, Flight Plan) dans le personnage du scientifique Hector Hammond ainsi que Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes) en tant que Sinestro, puissant mentor de Jordan au sein du Corps des Green Lanterns. Également au générique, Jay O. Sanders (Les Noces rebelles) joue le rôle de Carl Ferris, concepteur aéronautique et père de Carol. Temuera Morrison (La Guerre des étoiles, épisodes II et III) incarne Abin Sur, prédécesseur extraterrestre de Jordan. Taika Waititi (de la série télévisée The Flight of the Conchords) est l'officier navigateur Tom Kalmaku, ami et confident de Hal. L'actrice Angela Bassett (Tina), déjà nominée aux Oscars, est l'énigmatique Amanda Waller, scientifique employée par l'État et Tim Robbins (Mystic River), lauréat d'un Oscar, est le sénateur Robert Hammond, l'influent père d'Hector, Le film est produit par Donald De Line (Braquage à l'italienne) et Greg Berlanti (La Vie comme elle est, prochainement en salle). Herbert W. Gains et Andrew Haas en sont les producteurs délégués. Geoff Johns et Lucienne Papon le coproduisent. En coulisse, l'équipe artistique du film comprend plusieurs lauréats d'Oscars, notamment le directeur de la photographie Dion Beebe (Mémoires d'une geisha), le directeur artistique Grant Major (Le Seigneur des anneaux : le retour du roi) et la costumière Ngila Dickson (Le Seigneur des anneaux : le retour du roi), ainsi que Stuart Baird (Gorilles dans la brume, Superman), monteur nominé aux Oscars et collaborateur de longue date de M.
