"Israel Goldstein (1896-1986) Born Philadelphia, USA; died Jerusalem "US Conservative rabbi and Zionist. "Alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania, Columbus University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, Goldstein was rabbi of B'nai Yeshurun congregation in New York from 1918- 1960, when he became the rabbi emeritus. "He was active in the Zionist movement from his youth when he established HaTikva, one of the first Zionist youth clubs in America, and he served as president of Young Judea from 1930-1933. "Goldstein served as president of the Synagogue Council of America and as secretary of the International Conference of Christians and Jews. From 1930-1968 he was president of the Jewish Conciliation Board of America and between 1934-1943 served as the honorary president of the Jewish National Fund of America. From 1943-1961 he was president of the Zionist Organization of America and in 1946 was elected the first president of the World Confederation of General Zionists. In the same year he was the founder of Brandeis College. "In 1947 he became a member of the Political Advisory Committee of the World Zionist Organization to the Zionist delegation to the United Nations and in 1948, a member of the executive of the Jewish Agency, when he was appointed treasurer. At the same time he served as the first president of Amidar, the Israel national housing company. From 1949- 1960 he served as the chairman of the Western Hemisphere Executive of the World Jewish Congress, and from 1951-1958 as president of the American Jewish Congress. During his tenure, the American Jewish Congress vigorously opposed McCarthyism, supported equal rights for African Americans and attempted to counter Arab anti-Israel propaganda. "In 1950 Goldstein became the chairman of the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization and in 1961 moved to Israel, where he served as the world chairman of Keren Hayesod-UIA for ten years. Goldstein was the author of several books on the history of the Jews in America, the problems of Judaism, Zionism and the State of Israel. He published his memoirs, My World as a Jew in 1984." Israel Kamakawiwo`ole dit » Bruddah Iz » ou » IZ », fut le musicien et le chanteur hawaiien le plus connu et le plus adulé dans les années 1990. Il commenca à jouer de la musique avec son frère cadet, Skippy, dès l'âge 11 ans. Il dut sa renommée internationale à son medley, "Somewhere over the rainbow" - "What a wonderful world" dans l'album facing future (1993). Cette chanson fut fort diffusée sur les ondes françaises à la fin du 20e siècle, et apparaît dans le générique de fin de nombreux films, parmi lesquels "à la rencontre de Forrester, rencontre avec Joe Black, et amour et amnésie" Israël Kamakawiwo'ole est né le 20 mai 1959 sur l’ile d’Oahu et grandit à la Rivière Palolo, à Hawaii. Il fut élevé dans la communauté de Kaimuki aux faubourgs de Waikiki et fréquenta le théâtre Kaimuki. Il était tout juste adolescent quand sa famille se déplaca à Makaha pour entrer dans le monde de la musique. Kamakawiwo'ole co-fonda le groupe "Makaha Ni'ihau" avec son frère Skippy, « mort d'une crise cardiaque en 1982 ». Dans la même année, il épousa Izzy , son amour de jeunesse, Marlene et eurent une fille qu'ils appelèrent Ceslieanne "Wehi" née en 1982. En 1985 - le groupe gagnait le concours du meilleur album Traditionnel Hawaïen et fut élu groupe de l'Année à Hoku . Il maintiendra 17 ans de carrière avec ce même groupe et sortit 10 albums couronnés de succès. En 1991 - le premier album solo d'Israël "Ka ' Ano'i" gagna de nombreuses récompenses à Hoku pour être le meilleur album contemporain de l'année et fut également élu chanteur masculin de l'Année en 1993 - Toute la partie de sa vie était tristement supportée par son handicap . Obèse à un point que pour ses 1m88, il pesait non moins de 340 kgs. Il survécut à plusieurs hospitalisations mais malheureusement le chanteur fétiche de tous les hawaiiens nous quittait le 26 juin 1997 suite à une longue maladie respiratoire liée à son surpoids à l'âge 38 ans. Ses cendres furent dispersées dans l'océan . Ce grand monsieur était surnommé le « Géant Doux » par beaucoup de ses admirateurs. Il fut souvent décrit comme toujours gai et positif et était connu pour détenir et partager son incomparable amour pour la terre et les habitants d'Hawaii. Nul n’ignore que ses chansons furent souvent écrites pour exprimer un désir de reconquérir cette terre hawaiienne que les américains leur avaient volée.
