Félicien Rops

Félicien Rops (Namur le 7 juillet 1833 - Essonnes le 23 août 1898) est un artiste belge, peintre, lithographe, dessinateur, illustrateur et graveur. Après une première carrière de caricaturiste, il illustre notamment les livres de son ami Charles De Coster dont la Légende et les aventures d'Uylenspiegel (1866). Ami de Maurice Hagemans, il fit avec lui un voyage de formation en Norvège et en Allemagne en 1876. Féru de botanique, il s'y adonne en compagnie de l'éditeur français Auguste Poulet-Malassis, exilé à Bruxelles de septembre 1863 à mai 1871. Pour celui-ci, il réalise les frontispices des Bas-fonds de la société d'Henry Monnier (1864), du Diable au corps d'Andrea de Nerciat (1865), des Épaves de Charles Baudelaire (1866), des Jeunes France de Théophile Gautier (1866), de Gamiani d'Alfred de Musset (1866) ou de Point de lendemain de Vivant Denon (1867). Ses gravures comprennent La Peine de mort, L'Ordre règne à Varsovie, La Médaille de Waterloo, La Buveuse d'absinthe, La Grève, Pornokratès ou Mors syphilitica. Son succès l'ayant amené à Paris, il y illustre les écrits de grands auteurs tels Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Joséphin Péladan, Félicien Champsaur ou Mallarmé. Malgré ces références, il a longtemps été laissé dans l'ombre, le caractère érotisant d'une partie de son œuvre lui portant préjudice. En 1857, il épouse Charlotte Polet de Faveaux, fille d'un juriste namurois. De ce mariage naîtront un fils, Paul et une fille, Juliette, décédée en bas âge. Il est l'un des membres fondateurs du groupe des XX en 1883. Sa vue commence à baisser en 1892. Il conserve ses relations littéraires jusqu'à sa mort. Un musée lui est dédié dans sa ville natale.

As I have repeatedly predicted, once Libya fell, once the installation of a client government was accomplished, the oil ever so close to our hands, the press begins to open a little transparency. After all they only have to play this little game of cat and mouse a couple more times: Syria, Venezuela, Iran and one or two other loose threads -- and the world will have become one big McDonalds.
