Foreign ministers of 27 European Union countries are discussing the new possible sanctions in Luxembourg on Monday. The latest set of European sanctions against Syria that came into force on September 24 imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on the justice and information ministers, Tayseer Qala Awwad and Adnan Hassan Mahmoud. Investment in the Syrian oil sector was also banned, as were bank loans and acquisition of shares in Syrian companies and joint ventures. The EU also added six Syrian companies into the black list: Addounia TV, Cham Holding, El-Tel Co., Ramak Constructions Co., Souruh Company and Syriatel. On September 2, the EU banned imports of Syrian oil to take effect on November 15, when current oil contracts expire. Syria has been rocked with unrest for seven months. Western nations have accused the Syrian government of using force to crush opposition protests. The UN says over 2,000 people have died since the protests began. The opposition and the U.S. want President Bashar Al-Assad to step down. The opposition has refused to enter talks with the government.
