Un athlète hors pair Burt Lancaster est né au 209 de la 106e Rue1 du quartier East Harlem de Manhattan (New York) d’une famille d’origine anglo-irlandaise Quatrième de cinq enfants, il cultive le goût pour la lecture, le dessin et le piano. Il a également une passion pour l’opéra et, possédant une voix de soprano, il fait partie de la chorale d'une église. Mais surtout, c’est un athlète accompli et doué pour toutes les activités sportives, il pratique le basket-ball, l’athlétisme, la gymnastique et a une attirance prononcée pour les acrobaties de cirque3. Il monte un numéro de trapèze avec Nick Cravat3, ami d’enfance dont il conservera l’amitié toute sa vie et qu’il fera tourner à ses côtés dans bon nombre de ses films. Les deux compères quittent l’université de New York en 1932 pour se produire dans un cirque et partager la vie de saltimbanque des gens du voyage dans différentes tournées. Burt Lancaster se marie en 1935 avec June Ernst, une partenaire de piste, dont il divorcera en 1946 Puis Lancaster et Cravat se produisent dans des music-halls, mais suite à un accident Lancaster se fait une grave blessure au doigt et risque l’amputation s’il ne renonce pas au métier de trapéziste . Il se retrouve à Chicago sans un sou et exerce divers boulots pour s’en sortir, vendeur, pompier, contrôleur dans une entreprise, organisateur de concerts… En 1942, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il est appelé sous les drapeaux aux Services Spéciaux de la Ve Armée à Fort Riley dans le Kansas. Il sera affecté à la section pour le théâtre aux armées afin de monter des spectacles destinés à maintenir le moral des troupes Il participe au débarquement en Afrique du Nord en 1943 et suit la Ve Armée en Italie3, conduisant une revue itinérante « Stars and Gripes », il remontera jusqu’en Autriche.
