British Forces News: HMS Dauntless sails for South Atlantic - March 4, 2012 The Royal Navy's newest destroyer has set sail for the South Atlantic on its maiden mission. HMS Dauntless, one of the new breed of Type 45 destroyers, left Portsmouth this morning for a six-month deployment, cheered by forces families. Her deployment has already been overshadowed by the diplomatic row between Britain and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Argentina has criticised the timing of her deployment, accusing the UK of militarising the area at a time when Argentina has effectively disarmed itself, with its navy a shadow of what it once was. HMS Dauntless was commissioned into the fleet in 2010 and this will be her first operational deployment after completing an intensive period of sea trials and training. She was "christened" at Portsmouth Naval Base in June 2010. Commanding Officer Captain Will Warrender, said: "HMS Dauntless' ship's company has been working extremely hard over the last year or so to prepare for our first operational deployment. We are now ready to provide a reassuring presence in the region and protect British interests." Des bras, des yeux et une musique d’opéra : la destruction de centrales nucléaires devient soudainement belle. En Angleterre, la question du mix énergétique se pose, comme en France. Si, chez nous, c'est la part du nucléaire qui suscite des interrogations et des remises en cause (plus des trois-quarts de notre électricité), l'Angleterre, elle, a choisi de miser sur le nucléaire à hauteur de 20%, mais aussi et surtout sur le charbon pour environ 30% de son énergie, et sur le gaz pour près de 40%. Les énergies renouvelables quant à elles représentent moins de 5% et des entreprises locales ont de grandes ambitions pour ce marché d'avenir. C'est le cas d'Ecotricity, une entreprise britannique qui a été la première au monde à se lancer en 1996 sur le secteur de ces énergies propres. Selon Ecotricity, les méthodes controversées utilisées au Royaume-Uni pour produire de l'électricité seraient responsables de 30% des émissions de CO2 du pays, et c'est pour en finir avec cette pollution perpétuelle que l'entreprise milite pour transformer la "Great Britain" en "Green Britain". Pour cela, le pays se doit de faire sa révolution énergétique. Et ça tombe bien, c'est exactement ce que propose Ecotricity dans sa dernière campagne vidéo, au slogan évocateur "Dump the big six". En clair : "Jetez à la poubelle les 6 leaders actuels du marché de l'énergie britannique". Pour accompagner son message, un petit film d'une simplicité et d'une beauté déconcertantes, à base de destruction de centrales à énergie. Petite anecdote au passage, il faut savoir que l’idée originelle de cette campagne vient… d’un gif animé !

NATO and UK intelligence emails 'hacked' - January 9, 2012 It is reported that email addresses and passwords belonging to British, US and NATO officials were posted online after hackers targeted a US intelligence analysis firm over Christmas. Online "hacktivist" group Anonymous claimed via Twitter on Christmas Day that it had stolen a trove of emails and credit card information from Stratfor's member subscribers. Details of senior British intelligence officials and US defence staff were hacked, according to analysis carried out for the Guardian newspaper by John Bumgarner, an expert in cyber-security at the US Cyber Consequences Unit, a research body in Washington. In the US case, details of 173 individuals serving in Afghanistan were publicised, along with the personal details of former vice-president Dan Quayle and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Some 221 British military officials and 242 NATO staff were also victims along with advisers to Britain's Joint Intelligence Organisation, a body which reports sensitive information to Prime Minister David Cameron, Bumgarner found. Around 19,000 email addresses belonging to US military personnel were also leaked. Stratfor, which is based in Texas, specialises in foreign affairs and security issues. The hacked spreadsheets contained email addresses and encrypted passwords of around 850,000 individuals who had subscribed to the consultancy's website. Over 75,000 subscribers also had their credit card numbers and addresses revealed, the Guardian reported. Experts claim that the encrypted passwords could be cracked quickly using off-the-shelf software. "We are aware that subscriber details for the Stratfor website have been published in the public domain," a British government spokesman said. "At present, there is no indication of any threat to UK government systems." The hackers said they were able to obtain the information in part because Stratfor did not encrypt it, which could prove a major source of embarrassment to the global intelligence firm. Anonymous has been involved in scores of hacking exploits, including the recent defacing of a website of Syria's Ministry of Defence to protest a bloody crackdown on anti-government protesters. British Forces News: Destroyer keeps watch on Russian carrier - December 14, 2011 A Royal Navy destroyer has rushed to intercept a flotilla of Russian ships off Scotland in a return to Cold War tensions. The battlegroup, headed by aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov, is understood to have sought shelter from a storm in the Firth of Moray. The Admiral Kuznetsov is en route to Syria, in a show of Russian support for the country's under-fire regime. Along with destroyer escort she has diverted toward the Scottish coast, apparently to take shelter from North Sea storms. At 65,000 tons the Admiral Kuznetsov is roughly the size of Britain's long awaited new carriers. Built at the height of the Cold War, she is armed with Sukhoy SU 33 fast jets, KA-27 anti submarine warfare helicopters and Granit - NATO designation "Shipwreck" anti ship missiles. There is one major difference from cold war times: back then a Nimrod would have been used to keep a watchful eye on the visitors. Even so, defence has managed to keep close enough tabs on the fleet to send HMS York all the way from Portsmouth to escort the ships. So far the biggest row caused by the stopover is about dumping waste overboard.
