"US Conservative rabbi and Zionist.

"Alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania, Columbus University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, Goldstein was rabbi of B'nai Yeshurun congregation in New York from 1918- 1960, when he became the rabbi emeritus.

"He was active in the Zionist movement from his youth when he established HaTikva, one of the first Zionist youth clubs in America, and he served as president of Young Judea from 1930-1933.

"Goldstein served as president of the Synagogue Council of America and as secretary of the International Conference of Christians and Jews. From 1930-1968 he was president of the Jewish Conciliation Board of America and between 1934-1943 served as the honorary president of the Jewish National Fund of America. From 1943-1961 he was president of the Zionist Organization of America and in 1946 was elected the first president of the World Confederation of General Zionists. In the same year he was the founder of Brandeis College.

"In 1947 he became a member of the Political Advisory Committee of the World Zionist Organization to the Zionist delegation to the United Nations and in 1948, a member of the executive of the Jewish Agency, when he was appointed treasurer. At the same time he served as the first president of Amidar, the Israel national housing company. From 1949- 1960 he served as the chairman of the Western Hemisphere Executive of the World Jewish Congress, and from 1951-1958 as president of the American Jewish Congress. During his tenure, the American Jewish Congress vigorously opposed McCarthyism, supported equal rights for African Americans and attempted to counter Arab anti-Israel propaganda.

"In 1950 Goldstein became the chairman of the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization and in 1961 moved to Israel, where he served as the world chairman of Keren Hayesod-UIA for ten years.

Goldstein was the author of several books on the history of the Jews in America, the problems of Judaism, Zionism and the State of Israel. He published his memoirs, My World as a Jew in 1984."
