LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY - DONNA SUMMER

Née à Boston le 31 décembre 1948, Donna Adrian Gaines de son véritable nom, est issue d'une famille de 7 enfants. Dès son jeune âge, elle chante dans des chorales et à l'église et découvre la puissance de sa voix. A l'âge de 18 ans, elle quitte Boston en direction de New York pour faire carrière. Elle décroche un rôle en Allemagne pour la comédie musicale Hair ainsi que plusieurs petits contrats. Elle rencontre également un acteur du nom d'Helmut Sommer qu'elle épousa, mariage qui dura peu de temps. De cette union, Donna mis au monde sa première fille Mimi. En 1974, Donna rencontra Giorgio Moroder et Pete Belotte en Allemagne lors d'une audition. Cette rencontre fut le point de départ de sa carrière et nul ne pouvais se douter du resplendissant succès qui l'attendait. Elle lance un premier album (disponible en Europe seulement) Lady of the night, qui connu un certain succès. Donna retourne en amérique en 1975 et lance son premier album américain Love to love you baby. Le succès fut immédiat avec cet album qui contient une version de 17 minutes. Elle se remit à la production d'autres albums qui connurent un succès aussi éclatant. En 1976 , A love trilogy connu un succès avec la chanson Try me I know we can make it ainsi que Could it be magic. Vers la fin de la même année, un troisième album vu le jour aussi, Four seasons of love. En 1977, Donna lance I remember yesterday qui contient l'un de ses plus gros hit I feel love. Encore aujourd'hui, cette chanson traverse les époques et a même été remixée en 1995 et connu encore le succès sur les palmarès britanniques. La même année elle lance son premier album double, Once upon a time. En 1978, Donna joue au cinéma dans Thanks God it's friday dont la pièce Last dance remporte un grammy. La même année, elle lance son second album double Live and more qui contient de nouveaux titres dont MacArthur Park et Heaven knows. Mais c'est en 1979 qu'elle connu un époustouflant succès avec la sortie de son troisième et quatrième album double Bad Girls et On the Radio qui comprennent entre autre les pièces Hot Stuff , Bad girls , On the radio, No more tears (avec Barbra Streisand). Mais le disco tirant vers sa fin, Donna su avec brio changer un peu de style et se tourna vers les années 80 avec de nouveaux albums qui confirmèrent que la reine du disco était toujours aussi vibrante et que sa voix nous emporterais encore pour de longues années. Les années 80 furent beaucoup plus difficile pour Donna Summer. Changement de compagnie de disque, changement de style musical, un second mariage dont 2 autres enfants furent issue, un succès moins prononcé, un album double (son 5ième) composé en 1982 qui fut remisé sur les tablettes et qui sortit qu'en 1996 finalement. Des changements qui affectèrent sa vie professionnelle et privée. Mais le temps fit son oeuvre et elle su reprendre le contrôle de sa vie autant personnelle que professionnelle. En 1980 Donna débuta la décennie avec The wanderer, album style new wave. Ce fut en 1982 lors de la sortie de son album "Donna Summer" qu'elle retrouva la notoriété quelque peu perdue depuis 1980. Son troisième album de la décennie She works hard for the money connut un brillant succès en 1983. Par la suite en 1984, Cats without claws fit son apparition sur le marché mais avec un succès moyen. Il faut attendre 3 autres années avant d'avoir un nouvel album en 1987 avec All systems go qui ne connu guerre mieux de succès ici au Canada. Mais en 1989, retour en force avec son nouvel album Another place and time qui contient la pièce This time I know it's for real. D'autres albums de style Greatest hits sont également parues entre temps dont Walk Away (1980), The Summer collection (1985) et The dance collection (1987). Les années 90 sont de meilleur augure pour Donna. Malgré un moins grand nombre d'album parue, la Diva nous offre diverses pièces dont la voix puissante nous charme toujours 15 ans plus tard. En 1991 Mistaken identity fait son apparition et ne connais pas le succès escompté malgré d'excellentes pièces. En 1993, The Donna Summer Anthology fait son apparition et les fans peuvent découvrir 2 nouvelles chansons inédites de son album non paru en 1982, I'm a rainbow et Don't cry for me Argentina. Nous découvrons par la même occasion, la pièce Carry on produite en collaboration avec Giorgio Moroder. L'année suivante, 2 albums font leur apparition, soit Endless Summer, un greatest hits nous présentant 2 nouvelles excellentes pièces Melody of love et Any way at all, ainsi qu'un album de Noël, Christmas spirit, dont l'interprétation est tout simplement divine. Il nous faut attendre par la suite 5 longues années pour avoir un nouvel album original Live and more encore! parue en 1999 contenant 3 nouveaux extraits (6 sur le vidéo et 7 sur le dvd). I will go with you (Con te partiro), Love is the healer ainsi que My life . La cassette vidéo du concert ainsi que le DVD contiennent 5 autres pièces inédites (Someone to watch over me, If there is music there, Riding through the storm, Don't wanna work , Nobody) . Encore une fois, plusieurs greatest hits sont parues durant cette période : The best of (Allemagne 1990), This time I know it's for real (Europe 1991), Master séries (Allemagne 1997), Greatest hits (1998), The Collection (Europe 1998), Millenium Edition (Europe 1999). Durant cette période, 3 succès ont été remixés et ont fait l'objet de nouveau cd single : I feel Love (1995), The state of independence (1996), Carry on (1997 et 1998). L'album I'm a rainbow a finalement vu le jour en 1996 après 14 ans mis sur les tablettes. Plusieurs nouveaux titres ont fait leur apparition soit en duo ou l'objet d'une trame sonore. Does he love you? (duo avec Liza Minnelli 1996), Whenever there is love (duo avec Bruce Roberts du film Daylight 1996), My prayer for you (artistes variés 1999). Plusieurs pièces ont également fait l'objet de remixages en 1999 par les fan remixers. Les années 2000 semblent très prometteuses pour la carrière de Donna. Un nouveau contrat avec Epic records, la sortie très attendue de son prochain album, et, une revue musicale autobiographique, qui l'espère t'on, sera jouée à Broadway. En 2000, Donna nous a offert cinq nouvelles pièces pour patienter. Dreamcatcher (du film Naturally native), When I look up (duo avec Darwin Hobbs) ,The power of one (du film Pokemon 2000: the movie), When the dream never die (The mercy project), ainsi que Rosie Christmas, extrait de l'album Another Rosie christmas. Elle fut également de la distribution du fameux show Divas live 2000. C'est en 2003 que nous avons eu droit à 3 nouveaux titres lors de la sortie de l'album The journey, un greatest hits incluant You're so beautiful, I will live for love et That's the way. Nous attendons toujours avec impatience la sortie de son prochain album repoussé encore une fois. En 2004 et 2005 Donna fait plusieurs apparitions à divers endroits en Europe et aux Etats-Unis qui nous donnent quelques duos impressionants. Et c'est en 2005 que nous avons droit a de nouveaux titres, Power of love, un hommage a Luther Vandross, Are you brave?, et finalement I got your love, thème entendu sur l'émission Sex and the city en 2003. D'autres greatest hits sont également apparus. The millenium collection (2003), Ultimate collection (Holland) et Gold (2005). Une tournée se poursuivra en 2006...

Dans les foyers, à l’école et dans les institutions d’accueil, sur l’ensemble du continent africain, les enfants font face à la violence physique, émotionnelle et sexuelle. Les enfants de la rue vivent sous la menace de gangs, d’agressions et d'assassinats. Les enfants travailleurs subissent de nombreuses formes d’exploitation et d’abus. On estime à 3 millions le nombre de femmes et de filles qui chaque année subissent l`excision en Afrique, une pratique qui met en danger leur vie ainsi que celle de leur bébé lors de l’accouchement. En Afrique de l’ouest et du centre, tous les ans, des milliers d`enfants sont victimes de la traite. De nombreux enfants vivent au milieu de conflits armés, subissent une extrême pauvreté et sont touchés par le VIH/sida. En République Démocratique du Congo le nombre de victimes - femmes et enfants - de violences sexuelles se compte par centaines de milliers. En Afrique du Sud, en 2005, quatre cas de viol sur dix concernaient des enfants. Au Kenya 46% des femmes ont subi des actes de violence sexuelle pendant leur enfance et 25% des filles entre 12 et 24 ans ont perdu leur virginité de manière violente. « Ces chiffres ne montrent qu’une petite partie du phénomène, considère le directeur régional de l’Unicef pour l`Afrique de l’est et australe, Per Engebak. Par crainte de représailles et parce que les familles sont souvent prêtes à accepter un compromis, de nombreux cas de violence restent sans suite ». Trop souvent les systèmes qui sont appelés à protéger les enfants les laissent à leur sort. Ils grandissent dans l’oubli et dans l’indifférence, portant sur eux les séquelles physiques et émotionnelles de la violence subie. De plus, l’exposition à la violence peut favoriser la participation plus tard à des actes de violence, et très peu de pays en Afrique ont la possibilité d’aider ces enfants à prévenir ces comportements. « La réponse apportée par la grande majorité des pays dans la région vis-à-vis des enfants en conflit avec la loi est inappropriée, remarque la directrice régionale de l’Unicef pour l’Afrique de l’ouest et du centre, Esther Guluma : la justice dans son ensemble se caractérise par une culture de répression et de sanction plutôt que de réhabilitation. Quand des enfants sont envoyés en prison, ils sont exposés à des violences physiques et psychologiques extrêmes ». La Journée de l’Enfant Africain consacrée cette année au thème de la violence à l’égard des enfants, coïncide avec l'année où les Nations unies doivent présenter, en octobre 2006 à l’Assemblée générale, les résultats d`une étude sur la violence à l’encontre des enfants. Plusieurs pays d'Afrique ont mis en oeuvre des initiatives importantes, par exemple : Au Kenya, une grande campagne de sensibilisation Stop Violence against Children sera lancée ; la campagne a pour but de récolter 1 million de dollars afin de protéger et d’aider un demi million d’enfants. Au Ghana, le ministère de l'éducation a réalisé avec l`aide de l’Unicef un code de conduite pour les enseignants afin de réduire les abus sexuels au sein des écoles. En Afrique du Sud, les Thuthuzela Care Centers sont devenus un modèle pour les soins et l’encadrement des enfants - parfois âgés de moins de trois mois - victimes de viol. En Sierra Leone, l’Unicef soutient un projet similaire appelé Rainbow Center. Afin d’endiguer le phénomène de la traite des enfants, plusieurs pays d’Afrique de l’ouest ont mis en place des plans d’actions pour la prévention de la traite et la réinsertion des enfants victimes de la traite. La Journée de l’Enfant Africain a été créée il y a seize ans par les chefs d’Etats du continent : elle a été fixée au 16 juin afin de commémorer les confrontations violentes à Soweto où de nombreux enfants avaient perdu la vie. La violence est encore aujourd’hui le sort quotidien de millions d’enfants en Afrique. Mettre fin à cette violence est essentiel pour le bien-être des enfants mais aussi pour la paix et le développement du continent africain.

When one hears the name KAPENA these days, immediately a picture of three young men with musical instruments in arms comes to mind. But it wasn’t long ago that Kapena first competed in the "Brown Bags To Stardom" contest representing Kaimuki High School…the state-wide high school amateur talent competition. Since then, they have come a long way in the music business. While their "word of mouth" reputation grew, they moved on to become the house band at the local watering hole, Sparky’s Lounge. In 1986, Kapena’s first album entitled, "Satisfaction Guaranteed" was recorded live at Sparky’s and earned a nomination by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts for the 1987 "Na Hoku" award for "Most Promising New Artist." Their second recording project simply entitled, "KAPENA" hit the stores. Again the public response was incredible. This album showed a true display of the versatility of this group… leaving virtually no musical style unexplored. It held "Hawaiian Radio…KCCN’s’ #1 spot as the most requested Hawaiian Album for over 10 months. In 1988, Kapena took home two Hoku Awards; one for The Best Hawaiian Contemporary Album of the Year and Group of the Year! Kapena has been busy with live concert work. They give of their time generously to several charitable causes, and have helped foster a new pride in the Hawaiian and Tonga communities. For Kapena, it’s not just a matter of winning, there is a message here. Music is the global language, one that brings us all closer together. It is a vehicle for understanding ourselves and others. That’s what they hope to get across, while providing a generation with enjoyable entertainment. "New Horizons", the third album, became an instant success on the Hawaiian scene. Hawaiian scene. Hawaiian scene. Hawaiian scene. In late 1990, the group released their fourth and finest album, "Stylin’." This project skyrocketed to #1 on the Hawaiian charts and also #1 on the Hawaiian Reggae charts. This is the first time in Hawaii that one album has been #1 on both charts. The hits on this album included "Reggae Train," "Only Jah Knows," "Masese," "Listen," "Don’t Say Goodbye" – an original song written by Teimoni Tatofi – the guitarist and a classic remake of "Blue Darling." In 1991, Kapena released their fifth album "Pure Energy" which was a project that lived up to its name and hit Hawaii by storm. This project consisted of the ultimate blend of Hawaiian, Country, Jawaiian, and Contemporary Island Music at its very best. Their sixth album, "The Kapena Collection Volume One" is a mix of their greatest hits from "Satisfaction Guaranteed," "Kapena," "Stylin'," and "Pure Energy." "Wild Heart," the seventh album has a variety of music for young and old alike. They think it may be the album with the most diversity yet, with songs from the Islands of Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii, and Tahiti. This album includes many originals written by Kelly De Lima. He calls it "Island Music" – an expression that explains itself.explains itself. In addition to their busy schedule in Hawaii, they have also toured the South Pacific, performing in such countries as: Guam, Saipan, and Palau with sellout crowds at every performance. Kapena’s unique blend of South Pacific music is being played in over twenty countries worldwide. They have also toured the mainland U.S.A. in cities like Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Colorado. Kapena’s eighth album "Future Frontiers" has a wonderful blend of many different styles of music. One of the songs on the album features the kindergarten and first grade classes of the Windward Nazarene Academy. There are four original songs on the album, "Say I Love You" written by Saki and "Hilo Rain" written by "BB" Brown which features two rappers – one is "Fiji" and the other "Davey D," the program director of one of Hawaii’s Hottest Radio Stations, KCCN FM100. The other two originals entitled, "The Hawaiian Way" and "Kalena Koo’ was written by Kellyboy De Lima. The latter is a song written for his daughter, Kalena – nicknamed "Koo." Kapena’s ninth album, "All Access," invites you to take a special tour with a complimentary backstage pass and experience Kapena live and unplugged. In July 11, 1996 released their tenth album entitled, "I’ll Build You A Rainbow." KCCN Program Director "Davey D" said that this album is "The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!" Just as the sight of a rainbow evokes varied feelings, this album will bring out an array of emotional colors from the blueness of "I’ll Build You A Rainbow" to the red hot fun of "Sea of Heartbreak." Kapena chose the song "I’ll Build You A Rainbow" as the title track, because as Kelly Boy said, "The first time I heard this song I knew it was something special. It touched my heart so deeply that I cried and if you’ve ever lost a loved one you’d know what I mean." This song written in 1977 by S. Strong is built around a belief that the appearance of a rainbow is a sign of a "Blessing" from a departed loved one. Also in this album is Kelly Boy’s original song, "Sons and Daughters," which was written for the children of Hawaii and was also released on an album entitled "For The Sake Of The Children" for a benefit event called "No Na Keiki ‘O Kane’ohe." Appearing on their tenth album for the second time is the award winning Tahitian Group, Te Vai Ura Nui, who also appeared with Kapena at the Waikiki Shell for KCCN’s Sixth Birthday Jam. This show was a sell out and the crowd went wild when Kapena invited the famous Sumo wrestler "Konishiki" on stage to dance to the Samoan song, "Talofa Teine," from their "Wild Heart" release. To date, Kapena’s albums include SATISFACTION GUARANTEED, KAPENA, NEW HORIZONS, STYLIN’, PURE ENERGY, KAPENA COLLECTION VOLUME I, WILD HEART, FUTURE FRONTIERS, ALL ACCESS, AND I’LL BUILD YOU A RAINBOW, KAPENA COLLECTION VOLUME II, KAPENA IS DA CREW, THE SOLID ROCK, MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM KAPENA, and KAPENA 2000. True to form all their works are still called "Island Music" because of all their songs from all the Pacific Islands like Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, Tahiti, and of course, Hawaii! In addition to playing on all the islands here, they also toured the South Pacific this past year and performed on Guam, Saipan, Palau, Truk, Pohnpei, Majuro and for the first time on Yap. The group really enjoyed their Yap tour and thought the "island was beautiful and full of friendly people" with lots of "ono (delicious) crabs and lobsters." Kapena will be heading back to the South Pacific for a Christmas and New Year’s Eve concert tour. They will also be going to the Mainland U.S.A. for a full concert tour in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. If you are in Waikiki, you can catch them playing at Duke’s Restaurant and Canoe Club or at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel. Kapena celebrated the start of 1999 with a bang, releasing their twelveth album, "Kapena Is Da Crew." And the crew is definitely "in the house" with this one! Wayne Harada’s review in the Honolulu Advertiser said, "Kapena delivers the same spirit… (representing) the kind of hot licks the group delivers for its loyalists." Gear up for some serious foot stomping sounds that are a Kapena signature in songs like "Listen to the Music" and "Gin Gan Goolie" as well as Kelly’s emotional vocals in "Forgive Me." This past year was a busy one with the release of Kelly’s solo album, "Jus Kelly Boy," which includes the chart topping "I Cross My Heart." Golden oldies got a face-lift at Kelly’s skillful touch in "Tears of a Clown" and "Handyman" and endless summers waiting for the ultimate wave are recalled in his original compositions, "Pipeline" and "King Drop-In."
