A spokesman for Libya's leader for 42-years claimed the ousted dictator remains in the country and is surrounded by loyalists.
Moussa Ibrahim said in a call to Reuters news agency that he did not know where the 69-year-old was but insisted he was well defended.
"He's in the country and he's in a safe place surrounded by many people who are prepared to protect him," Mr Ibrahim said.
He also dismissed suggestions that Bani Walid was ready to surrender.
