File 012 440606 0900-0930 EWT

- This file starts abruptly with an eye witness account, like if the first seconds of the account are missing. It’s an eye witness account by David Anderson. “[…] I was at this RAF tactical station a few hours ago. These pilots covered not only the actual invasion coast, but roads and railroads far behind what may be termed ‘the frontline’. […] You’ve undoubtedly heard of the allied planes shot by allied ships and anti-aircraft in the invasion of Italy. General Eisenhower was quick to realize this potential danger. So in the hours just before take-off time, the wings and bellies of all allied crafts, British as well as American, were painted with alternative black and white stripes. […] We’re on the march. We can only hope that the Germans are on the march, backwards.”

- David Anderson’s account is followed directly by Ed Hawker with his eye witness account from a bomber station. “[…] No moving off base ate night for a few quick mild-and-bitters in a nearby pub. We’re under lock-and-key, and it suddenly began to dawn on us that great events we’re in the oven. […] Within a few hours we [the correspondents; A.L.] washed and shaved, for what reason I don’t know. We had our snack at the officer’s mess. Then to the briefing room where colonel Seymour stood waiting for his flyers to seat themselves. Large, brightly lighted [tables?] covered with maps and charts of Hitler’s Europe. Ed Hawker describes the opening of the invasion as “hooch, sooch, shooter”. Hawker even witnessed the actual bombardments, sitting the belly of a B 26.

- Eye witness accounts from Rome, Ralph Lauren on the spot, the second day of the liberation.

- News summary. “Every allied leader is satisfied with the progress made so far.”

- NBC Newsroom Washington. Richard Hawkness gives picture of Washington on D-Day, focusing on the press and the president. “[…] So about four o’clock this morning we of NBC here routed out for instance mister dr. Alexander Louten, the ambassador from the Netherlands, and we awakened senator Berkeley, the majority leader of the senate, from Kentucky, we routed out speaker Sam (Raven?) of Texas and the representative Joe Martin who is the minority leader […]”

- News bulletins.
